The curtain falls on the MAAA Road Running League with next Sunday's Bugibba 10K, the last race in a series of four which took off in September.

The course, which takes the runners from the start at Qawra right out to Salina and back to the finish at Bay Square, Bugibba, is regarded as the fastest of the four.

In the men's seniors race, John Buhagiar is practically home and dry after his two convincing wins so far.

His absence from the Gozo leg - only the best three times are taken into account - means that Buhagiar is still one race away from making sure of final victory.

However, his lead over his imminent rivals Gerald Grech and Jonathan Balzan is such that he can afford to run a tactical race, simply sticking to the leading group, and still win overall by some one and a half minutes.

Buhagiar dismissed any suggestions that he is only aiming to defend his advantage.

"I've never won the league before, the best I've managed so far is a second place some four years back, and it would be nice to do so finishing unbeaten," he said.

"More importantly, in the teams' event, we are in with a good chance of upsetting one, if not two, of the more established clubs, and every single second count."

An intriguing battle for second place, on the other hand, is anticipated, with Grech a mere nine seconds ahead of Balzan.

Grech, of AS Libertas, who only finished eighth last year, is one of the most in-form runners and has set himself a clear target.

"The Bugibba course is one of my favourites, fast and flat. I've been training hard and I feel I'm running fairly well. Sunday's race comes just at the right time for me to try to go for a personal best," Grech remarked.

St Patrick's runner Balzan is still entertaining hopes of wresting second place from Grech but knows that his task is a difficult one. Well aware of Grech's form, he seems more concerned with consolidating his third spot, the minimal gap between the two being a source of satisfaction just the same.

In the women's seniors race, favourite Giselle Camilleri, also of St Patrick's, is just one race away from overall victory.

"Unfortunately I'm not fully fit at the moment," Camilleri revealed.

"Even at Maqluba some five weeks ago, I wasn't at my best, running almost a full minute slower than the previous leg. Had I run in Gozo I honestly don't know if I would have taken part at all, but it's been four years since my last league title, and I just can't afford to miss Sunday's race.

"Thankfully, my lead is quite substantial, so I hope that I will at least manage to conserve my advantage."

St Patrick's firm favourites

In the men's teams event, St Patrick's are all but assured of winning the final honours.

AS Libertas, having fielded a depleted team at Ghajn Tuffieha, are left to fight it out with Birkirkara St Joseph, Zurrieq Wolves, and Mellieha for a top-three finish.

Starting time for the race, for both seniors and juniors, men and women, is 8 a.m.
