Custom officers seized 100 grams of the party drug meow meow contained in a package addressed to two foreigners facing trafficking charges.

The parcel, intercepted yesterday at a Maltapost branch, is the second in a span of five days allegedly addressed to an American man and Romanian woman who were arrested last week in connection with another package that arrived with 500 grams of meow meow.

The two, Rodney Andrew Molt, 24, and Anna-Maria Beatrice Ciocanel, 22, were arrested on Friday when the police intercepted a parcel with the drug, known scientifically as mephedrone, addressed to their Attard apartment.

The packet, split into four plastic bags, had just arrived from Prague in the Czech Republic.

Duty Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera appointed experts to help her in the inquiry into the latest find. Police are still investigating.

Available on the internet as plant food but “not for human consumption”, the drug was banned in the UK last April after a series of deaths were linked to it. The drug has been banned in most Scandinavian countries and in September it was also banned in Malta.

The drug comes in the form of white crystals or powder that are either snorted or mixed with drinks. Its effects have been compared to those of both ecstasy and cocaine. It gained popularity primarily because it was legal and, therefore, very cheap.
