Tarxien Rainbows dragged themselves out of the relegation battle with a comfortable 3-0 win over a depleted Hamrun Spartans side this afternoon.

There was never any doubt on who would take the points as the Rainbows were too strong for a Spartans side who drafted in several youngsters in their starting formation as coach Stefan Sultana preserved his big guns for the upcoming FA Trophy semi-finals.

The Rainbows were in control right from the outset but for all their possession they could not breach the Spartans defence where goalkeeper Andrea Cassar distinguished himself with a string of fine saves. The breakthrough was finally broken on 48 minutes when Jimmy Mayasi made space for himself on the edge of the area and unleashed a low drive that gave no chance to Cassar.

Tarxien remained the better side and they managed to wrap up the points with two quickfire goals in the closing stages of the match. In fact on 88 minutes Mark Tanti released Adrian Carabott who fired a low drive past Cassar.

The Tarxien winger struck again in time added on when this time he was set up by Mayas and he cooly beat Cassar with a firm drive.

Tarxien striker Jimmy Mayasi was named as the BOV Player of the match.
