A nine-year-old girl has died after a sand hole collapsed on her at an Oregon beach.

Police, firefighters and paramedics who rushed to the scene in Lincoln City battled to revive Isabel Franks after she was pulled from the hole, but were unable to save the youngster.

Emergency teams who responded shortly after 5pm local time said they found a group of people trying frantically to dig Isabel out of the large hole.

Police began CPR after she was pulled free, unconscious and not breathing. North Lincoln Fire and Rescue and ambulance medical teams took over CPR, and Isabel was taken to hospital, but was pronounced dead.

Family members were with Isabel when the hole collapsed.

Police said Isabel and her family were visiting the coast from Sandy, 28 miles south east of Portland.
