The greasy, foamy slime that has plagued Maltese shores this summer season reached Marsascala bay and surrounding areas this afternoon.

Photos sent to the Times of Malta show large patches of sea clouded over by the slime, which has previously been reported at Kalanka Bay, Peter's Pool, Bugibba and Sliema, among others.

"This is the worst-ever season," one reader said. "It's terrible."

Another reader said the sludge had also reached the opposite end of the island, by Għajn Żejtuna bay, Mellieħa.

Many swimmers are convinced the slime emanates from nearby fish farms, and a few days ago a fish farm owner admitted to the Times of Malta that the industry was polluting local shorelines.
