Roberto Rossellini’s film Journey to Italy (Viaggio in Italia) will be screened at Spazju Kreattiv Cinema, St James Cavalier, Valletta, on Wednesday at 7.30pm.

Reputed to be among the most influential films of the postwar era, it charts the declining marriage of an English couple (Ingrid Bergman and George Sanders) during a trip in the countryside near Naples.

More than just the anatomy of a relationship, Rossellini’s masterpiece is a heartrending work of emotion and spirituality. The film journal Cahiers du cinéma hailed Journey to Italy as a breathtaking cinematic benchmark, and considered it a groundbreaking modernist work and a predecessor to the existentialist works of Michelangelo Antonioni.

Gloria Lauri-Lucente from the University of Malta will introduce the film.
