Some 4,500 scouts and guides marched in Valletta this morning to the sound of the pipes and drums of 19 scout bands in the joint scouts and guides annual parade.

The parade had added significance this year, it being the centenary year of the founding of The Scout Association of Malta. The National Centenary Flag was paraded along with the Colours.

The association was formed on November 9, 1908, the first outside the UK, and the parade, held under a blazing sun, showed that the years have not diminished the enthusiasm of the founders.

Many ‘old boys’ wearing their old berets or scarves joined the activity, but what was especially striking was the large number of cubs, a guarantee that the future of scouting remains secure.

The parade was led by the Marsa Scouts. It marched off from the Granaries and proceeded down Republic Street to Palace square, where Acting President George Hyzler took the salute.

The parade then marched up Merchants’ Street and dispersed at Castille Square.

Taking part were 40 scout groups and 30 guide companies, all of them well turned out and some showing particularly good drill, marching smartly and in step.
