Over the weekend, the first touring side from Scotland played at Marsa. Morton CC, based in Edinburgh, lost the toss and were asked to bat. They totalled 166 runs for the loss of eight wickets from their 40 overs.

A. Cunningham (30), G. Turton (38) and H. Mitchell (25) were the main run scorers. For the home side G. Hewitt and J. Farrugia took two wickets each.

In reply, the Marsa batting was up to the challenge and made the runs with four overs to spare.

In-form batsman J. Callus, batting at number five, made an unbeaten 78 not out. Earlier, a fine innings from J. Grima saw him falling short of making a 50. For the Scots, F. Bell and G. Turton took two wickets each.

Marsa won the first of the two-series game. They won the toss again on Sunday and this time elected to bat. F. Spiteri (56) and A. Kyle (20) opened the innings with a partnership of 62. At this stage, with Spiteri still at the crease, people in the changing rooms were looking at record scores to be made for the day.

But the optimism quickly disappeared when in the next 14 overs the home side lost seven wickets for a further 56 runs. Things were desperate at this stage with only Hewitt (34 runs not out), Sunny Krishna (12) and Sagar Krishna (8 runs not out) to face the remaining 17 overs.

By their efforts, a challenging total of 184 runs was posted. The strike bowler for the visitors was M. Kinghorn. He took five wickets for 17 runs of his allotted overs.

Marsa then bowled Morton for 135 giving the home side victory by 49 runs and a clean sweep in the series.

Lowestoft Town

Last week, Lowestoft Town CC, of England, also made their first appearance in Malta in a two-game series against the locals.

They won the first game by eight wickets but lost a dramatic second match which was decided in the final over. In between, Lowestoft beat Morton in a friendly.

Next weekend sees the return of Harrow School. They play on Saturday at 10 a.m. and the following Tuesday. On Sunday, Marsa play Radley College at 9 a.m.
