A group of Maltese and Italian scientists, led by George Attard and Anthony Gruppetta of the University of Malta, are attempting to analyse the DNA of the pharaoh hound to determine the origin of this breed.

Generations of Maltese hunters have bred the dog, more commonly referred to as kelb tal-fenek, yet the origin of the breed is scientifically unknown as no in-depth study has ever been performed. The dog, first mentioned by historiographer Ġan Franġisk Abela in 1647, is highly esteemed for its ability to hunt rabbits, especially over harsh and rocky terrain. The pharaoh hound was declared the national dog in 1974.

The scientists will analyse the DNA found in the mitochondria of red blood cells of the dogs. This type of analysis traces the genetic lineage along the maternal line and is used in genetic studies to describe population history, patterns of gene flow, genetic structure and species limits

Dr Attard and Dr Gruppetta have invited the Federation for Hunting and Conservation (FKNK) and members who own a Maltese rabbit dog to collaborate in this genetic survey by facilitating the collection of blood samples.

The scientists are hoping that the results will also give an indication on the inbreeding status of the dogs.

Recommendations can then be made for a professional breeding programme to reduce the incidence of inbreeding.
