Tarxien Rainbows needed a last-gasp goal from Andre Scicluna to overcome Qormi 1-0 at the Centenary Stadium.

It was Qormi who threatened first after nine minutes when Yannick Yankam’s header was cleared off the line by Radu Rogac.

Tarxien responded with a swift break on 19 minutes as Gabriel Aquilina released Daren Falzon on the right but the latter’s effort was neutralised by Jamie Azzopardi.

Four minutes from the end of the first half, the Rainbows threatened again when Falzon’s close-range header was turned into a corner by Jamie Azzopardi.

In the second half, Qormi continued to hold the initiative and in the 49th minute, Alexsandro Ferreira concluded a good move on the right with a shot which was deflected into a corner by Cassar.

Just past the hour, the Tarxien goalkeeper was prominent again The Tarxien goalkeeper when he denied Ferreira.

At the other end, Aquilina came close but his firm drive was pushed away by Azzopardi.

But Tarxien still managed to notch the winner one minute from time when Jamie Azzopardi blocked a corner from the left and Scicluna was on hand to head the ball from the rebound.
