The history of Argotti Gardens, Floriana, is intricately linked with the study of botany, natural history and various medical sciences. The study of Medicine and Surgery at the Order's Infirmary and at the medicinal herb garden that was located in the ditches of Fort St Elmo, has also been connected with Argotti Gardens since around 1676.

The Argotti Gardens' botanical section falls under the University of Malta's jurisdiction. The gardens have been in the University's possession since 1855, although the connection goes back to 1805.

In order to promote the gardens' educational value the University and the Education Division's Curriculum Department are organising educational tours for schools lasting up to 90 minutes, during the scholastic year.

The aim is to make these visits an outdoor lesson with a difference. A tour of the gardens relates the plant displays to everyday classroom situations and to the general curriculum. Special emphasis is placed on observations and explanations related to plant growth. Some hands-on practical exercises are also included.

The talks are adapted to different age groups. The visits cater for students from Year 1 primary to Fifth and Sixth Form students. Separate arrangements can be made for biology and geography teachers who are welcome to bring their groups for plant biology and ecology-related lectures and practicals.

Groups should not exceed 25 students and must be accompanied by a teacher. The tours may be held every day of the week during mornings only and are strictly by appointment.

All primary and secondary school students visiting Argotti Botanic Gardens will be eligible to participate in a drawing competition and the best works will be exhibited. Two book token prizes will be awarded in each category, with a special award for the school with the greatest number of entries in each category. The school will be rewarded for its effort with a prize of 10 indigenous trees or plants for use on its premises.
