Transport Malta has launched a scheme to regularise vehicles that have been disposed of without it being informed.

Scrappage or deregistration of vehicles is only permitted if the vehicle owner presents a certificate of destruction issued by an authorised facility. This certificate confirms that the vehicle was transferred in accordance with the Waste Management (End-of Life Vehicles) Regulations.

Transport Malta said it was aware that certain vehicle owners returned their vehicle’s registration plates, garaged it but then scrapped or sold their vehicle without informing the authority.

It said it would be sending a letter to all vehicle owners who garaged a vehicle to confirm the address where the vehicle was garaged.  Transport Malta would ascertain that the vehicles were still in possession of the owner.

Vehicles declared as garaged but which had been disposed of prior to November 1, 2013 and without giving notice to the authority, would be able to deregistered with the authority upon presentation of a sworn affidavit by not later than February next year.

If a vehicle was unofficially disposed of after November 1, 2013, a €100 fee would be paid to the authority. Such a concession would be available until the end of February next year.

A €500 fee would have to be paid to the authority for the deregistration of any vehicle which was not disposed of at an authorised facility after March 2, next year.
