Transport Malta is extending a scheme to regularise vehicles declared as “garaged” but which have actually been scrapped or disposed of without Transport Malta being informed.

The scheme, launched in July, which was originally meant to run until the end of February, is now being extended until the end of June.

Transport Malta said that 2,519 vehicles were scrapped in January compared to 349 a year earlier. To date, 2,776 vehicles were scrapped this month compared to 329 in February last year.

Since November 1, scrapping or de-registering a vehicle is only permitted if the owner presents a certificate of destruction issued by an authorised facility. The certificate confirms that the vehicle was transferred in accordance with the Waste Management (End-of Life Vehicles) Regulations.

Vehicles declared as garaged but which have been disposed prior to November 2013 without notifying the authority could be de-registered with the authority upon presentation of a sworn affidavit by the end of June. If a vehicle was unofficially disposed of after November 1, 2013, a €100 fee would be paid to the authority. This concession is until the end of June.

A €500 de-registration fee shall be paid to the authority for any vehicle not disposed of at an authorised facility after July 1.
