A new three-year scheme to finance tomato growers up to €500,000 a year for three years was launched this morning by Rural Affairs Minister George Pullicino.

The aim of the scheme is to create a more comprehensive system in the chain of tomato processing.

The assistance should lead to the best end product possible being produced, Mr Pullicino said.

There are in Malta five tomato producer organisations, three tomato processors and 211 tomato growers.

Tomato production this year amounted to more than 6,200 tonnes.
