The Ministry of Tourism’s renegotiation of the Isle of MTV concert contract has saved the government at least €200,000 over three years.

Answering a question by Claudio Grech (PN), Tourism Minister Edward Zammit Lewis said that, in contrast, the contract that the government found in force in 2013 meant that concert costs would have continued to rise every year.

Figures he laid on the Table of the House showed that the costs had kept increasing from €821,631 in 2007 to €1,395,249 in 2014.

Dr Zammit Lewis pointed out that the current total costs included social media campaigns to promote the concerts to wider international markets.

He said there had never been a study or analysis of the annual concert’s benefits to the country, but last year he had given instructions for such a study or analysis from this year’s concert onwards.
