Former minister Austin Gatt has been ordered to pay damages of €1,000 to  Alfred Sant after he implied that the former prime minister had a drink problem.

Dr Gatt had made comments at a meeting of the PN General Council in which he referred to the tone of a speech by Dr Sant in a political activity in September 2007, saying it was like the leaders featured in the Discovery Channel programme Altered Statesmen.

The court observed that while Dr Gatt had not directly said that Dr Sant had a drink or drug problem, his reference to the Discovery documentary was clear inuendo.
