Former Prime Minister and MEP candidate Alfred Sant has warned that changes in the European Union relating to government budget, taxation, industry, the enivornment, and immigration could bring both threats and challenges to society.
Speaking during a social activity in Qawra, Dr Sant said there would be pressure for more decisions to be taken centrally, especially in the eurozone.
“We need to watch out against more one size fits all policies,” he warned,
He said Malta had to monitor developments on an ongoing basis taking into account how they would affect economy and society and there was no reason, if there ever was one, for Maltese representatives to be servile while assuming that all that the EU proposed was going to eventually turn out right for Malta.
“This has happened too often in the past, with negative consequences. A spirit of constructive realism should prevail without letting the stars get in out eyes as we set out Malta’s goals and requests,” he said.
