Alfred Sant has written to the head of the European Socialists' Group in the European Parliament, Martin Schultz, to thank him for his good wishes following the Labour leader's operation last month.

"Your good wishes are not only much appreciated but help to encourage me further to get over the recovery period speedily and soon fully join in the political give and take," Dr Sant told Mr Schultz.

"The coming election campaign is going to be a very important test for the Maltese and I deeply believe that this time Labour will acquire their trust to bring about much needed change. In this connection the moral support of all our Socialist friends in Europe is most welcome."

Dr Sant said he looked forward to meeting Mr Schultz and other colleagues of the Socialist group when they visit Malta later this month.

Surgeons removed a malignant tumour in the Labour leader's colon during a three-and-a-half-hour operation on December 27.
