A Labour government will complete the Gozo ferries harbour project in six months and investigate why the project had gone so over budget, Labour leader Alfred Sant said this morning.

He told a press conference at Cirekkwa that the project, which included the building of new quays and terminal buildings in Mgarr and Cirkewwa, was meant to have been completed in 2001. Since then, seven completion dates had been given and the project was not ready yet.

And the initial estimated cost of Lm8 million in 1999 had snowballed to Lm14.5 million and was expected to rise further.

This,, Dr Sant said, was just one example of government inefficiency for which no one had been held accountable and no explanations had ever been given.
