Booksellers reported brisk sales of Dr Alfred Sant's autobiographical book, Confessions of a European Maltese, which went on sale yesterday.

In this latest book (following his monumental historical novel La Bidu, La Tmiem 1599), Dr Sant recounts his experiences as a young man studying and working in various European capitals in the Sixties and Seventies. He had served for a time at the Maltese Embassy in Brussels, when the island had signed its association agreement with the European Economic Community.

Brian Sapienza of Sapienzas in Republic Street, Valletta, said yesterday that they were "overwhelmed" by demand for the book, which is selling from leading stationeries at Lm3.50.

Among other things Dr Sant reveals what went on in negotiations, at which he was present, between Maltese government delegations under the Borg Olivier and Mintoff administrations and the EEC in the early Seventies.

The 470-page book includes 40 pages of illustrations, with some photographs being published for the first time.
