Now is the season for the bloodsuckers, called sandfly, to derive nutrients and this not because they had vanished but because of the cold weather.
Suppliers have made available a large number of products to protect our loving four-legged creatures, such as vaccinations, electric fans to push the tiny fly away, citronella and aerosols. Still, the problem remains and has existed since time immemorial.
Our island has one of the best environments for the sandfly to settle and seek targets. No matter the preventive measures we take, sooner or later the sandfly will hit.
There are sandflies that could take the weather no matter how rough it is. The ones that survive are those much stronger and when they breed their offspring will be more menacing and the problem gets worse.
The sandfly is at its worse during the summer months and, especially, at night, when it is humid. Thus, it would be wise to keep dogs away from danger by ensuring they are indoors at night-time, particularly between 7pm and 7 am.
