Despite missing two penalties and having two players sent off, San Gwann were still strong enough to beat St Andrews.

Substitute Chris Cuschieri scored the all-important goal which enabled the Saints to move three points clear at the top of the table.

San Gwann had two penalty calls turned down by the referee. In the 17th minute, they lost Mark Psaila who was red-carded for dissent.

On the half hour, the Saints came close to taking the lead when Renato Caruana's header was cleared off the line by Ryan Calleja. In the 39th minute, San Gwann were awarded a penalty for a foul by Martin Sammut on Caruana. Chris Agius's shot from the spot was partially saved by Peter Said and from the rebound Karl Sciberras's header was hooked away by Brian Galea.

Less than a minute into the second half, San Gwann gained a second penalty for a foul by Stephen Falzon on Alan Spiteri but Dorian Colombo shot wide.

San Gwann continued to pile up the pressure but were denied by Said who was in fine form.

The Division Two leaders finally found a breakthrough on 82 minutes when Cuschieri hit home the winner. Three minutes into added time San Gwann defender Adrian Gatt was sent off for a second booking.

Attard 1
Zebbug Rangers 1

Zebbug Rangers failed to ease their relegation worries as they were held to a one-all draw by Attard in a match they dominated for long stretches, hitting the woodwork on two occasions.

The Rangers gained the upperhand from the word go, Attard's goalkeeper Tyron Spiteri pulling off saves to deny Gordon Mallia.

Three minutes from the break, Zebbug were again close but Jason Cassar's shot just missed the target. The Rangers continued to press forward on the resumption and on 69 minutes the crossbar denied Cassar from giving Zebbug the lead.

Cassar was again unlucky 10 minutes from time when his shot hit the upright but a minute later Carlo Leonardi put Zebbug ahead.

However, Attard took only five minutes to draw level when they were awarded a penalty for a foul by Genovese on Casha. James Vella converted the penalty kick.

Pembroke Athleta 0
Gharghur 2

Gharghur obtained their third successive victory after beating Pembroke. They played the better football during the first half , forging ahead in the 28th minute with a fine effort by Jeremy Dalli.

Pembroke could have equalised four minutes later but Gharghur goalkeeper Mark Aquilina thwarted Kevin Vella with a fine save.

Ten minutes from the break, Gharghur doubled their lead through substitute Nigel Zerafa.

Keeping up the pressure after the restart, Gharghur had efforts by Kris Sargent and Chris Vella Petroni saved by the Pembroke goalie. Gharghur were then unlucky as Loporto's drive smacked against the crossbar.

Siggiewi 1
Fgura United 1

Promotion hopefuls Fgura were on their way to another win but a mistake by goalkeeper Clayton Mifsud gifted Siggiewi a late equaliser.

Fgura held the upperhand throughout the first half and Elton Zammit, Twanny Gheiti and Tony Borg all could have given them the lead. They drew first blood on 32 minutes when William Stewart scored from close distance.

Siggiewi improved after the resumption with Louis Buhagiar going close from a direct free-kick.

Siggiewi pressed forward and their efforts were rewarded a minute into injury time when Mifsud misjudged a long-range shot by Eman Ciappara.

Birzebbuga 1
Ghaxaq 5

Birzebbuga's promotion aspirations suffered a blow when they were surprisingly beaten 5-1 by Ghaxaq.

Ghaxaq took only six minutes to take the lead when Sandro Lapira hit home from an Angelo Portelli pass.

Birzebbuga almost drew level on 17 minutes when an Ghaxaq defender clearance hit the crossbar.

Lapira made it 2-0 on 26 minutes, after an indecision in the Birzebbuga defence. Just before the break, Paul Camilleri reduced the arrears for Birzebbuga. In the 57th minute Ghaxaq were awarded a penalty for a foul by Peter Cachia on Brian Barbara and Alex Farrugia duly converted to make it 3-1.

Lapira notched his hat-trick, on 80 minutes, and three minutes from time, he sealed Ghaxaq's win.

Gudja United L
St George's 1

Promotion contenders St George's lost two precious points when they were held to a draw by Gudja.

Gudja were ahead after four minutes courtesy of Charlo Debattista.

St George's hit back strongly and Joe Mizzi and Lawrence Mizzi were denied by Gudja goalkeeper Xerxen.

Two minutes before the end of the first half, Gudja could have increased their lead but Chris Grech's close-range header was saved by Gauci.

The Saints dictated play in the second period and after Mizzi missed a sitter, they hit the crossbar with an effort by Christian Grech.

St George's levelled matters on 78 minutes when they were awarded a penalty.

Keith Darmanin made no mistake from the penalty spot to earn his side a point.
