St Andrew's 3
Luqa SA 0

\n

St Andrew's obtained a merited victory over lowly Luqa as Robert Kelly's team have made sure of avoiding the drop.

Claude Scerri opened the score after five minutes and soon after the restart it was 2-0 thanks to a Ryan Calleja goal following a good move by John Stivala.

Scerri rounded up the score for St Andrew's in the 70th minute with team-mates Stivala and Eminyan seeing their efforts going off target late in the game.

San Gwann 1
Gzira United 1

San Gwann lost two precious points in the race for promotion. They are now equal on points with Vittoriosa Stars but the latter have a game in hand and are firm favourites to join Tarxien Rainbows in the First Division next season.

San Gwann attacked for most of the match but they were rather ineffective in front of goal. They twice went close through Dorian Colombo and Mark Psaila but somehow the Gzira rearguard held tight.

Three minutes after the break, Psaila's header came off the bar but in the 50th minute it was Gzira who took the lead through Baldassare Borg.

The Maroons held the initiative but gradually the Saints recovered composure and deservedly drew level eight minutes from time when a Chris Agius drive finished in the Gzira net.

San Gwann pressed hard for a winner but the woodwork again came to Gzira's rescue, this time on an Adrian Gatt lob.

Two minutes from time, San Gwann were awarded a penalty for a foul on Renato Caruana but it was not to be their day as goalkeeper Brian Bonello saved Agius's shot from the spot.

Zurrieq 0
Zebbug Rangers 0

Zebbug Rangers got the point they needed to assure themselves of Second Division football next season. This result means that Qormi and Luqa St Andrews are the two teams to be relegated

Zurrieq proved to be the better team throughout the first half and after only five minutes a close range Robert Bajada shot hit the upright. Here, the Rangers' keeper injured himself and had to leave the pitch.

During the second period Zurrieq maintained the upperhand and on two occasions substitute goalkeeper Attard effected fine saves off efforts by Chris Farrugia and Bajada.

Jason Cassar's header for Zebbug was then stopped by the post as Zurrieq's reply produced a Godfrey Chetcuti free-kick which was blocked by Attard.

Division Three play-offs

St George's 1
Fgura United 0

St George's opened their commitments in the play-offs with a hard-earned victory over Fgura, who are now practically out of the promotion race.

The first period was a balanced affair with both sets of defences closing all avenues to their goal. After nine minutes Fgura tested Pulis through a Harold Stewart free-kick and in the 20th minute a shot by Paul Fenech just missed the target.

On resumption, play continued to be very balanced with Fgura going close early on through Mark Schembri and Fenech. At the other end, the Saints had their own chances through Keith Darmanin. On 80 minutes an effort from the St George's player was cleared in time by Jeffrey Saliba.

Seven minutes from time St George's broke the deadlock from a calibrated Darmanin free-kick. Fgura's late reaction proved futile.

Melita 2
Kirkop United 2

This was an exciting match which, quite rightly, ended all square as both Melita and Kirkop maintained their promotion chances alive.

Melita had an encouraging start and in the first minute Andrew Naudi hit wide from a good position. However, in the 22nd minute Duncan Micallef provided an excellent pass to Jean Paul Zammit who put Kirkop ahead with a firm grounder.

On the half-hour mark Melita were awarded a penalty for a foul on Darren Agius. Naudi put his side level from the spot.

Three minutes after the restart Kirkop tested Sapiano with a powerful Alistair Camilleri shot and in the 60th minute Kirkop regained the lead. Micallef sent in an inviting inswinger from a corner and Antoine Spiteri hit home to make it 2-1.

In the 77th minute Melita were awarded a second penalty for a handling infringement by Kevin Azzopardi who was sent off for a second booking. Naudi, again, made no mistake from the spot to make it two-all.

Referee: Roberto Buontempo.
