Paul Muscat Terribile, a San Ġwann councillor and Third Age University coordinator, last night won the Elderly of the Year Award.

Mr Muscat Terribile was recognised for his "exemplary activity and for the contributions he made to the whole country".

Bro. Martin Borg, who presented the award, now in its 15th edition, heaped praise on Mr Muscat Terribile, saying he had set an example to all those who reach pensionable age. Through his contribution, he helped to improve the quality of life of pensioners within the community.

The award is intended to honour individuals who do voluntary work, inspire other elderly people through their character and activities and contribute to a better community life.

Bro. Martin said 41 individuals were nominated for the award - an absolute record.

Social Policy Minister John Dalli said the award was a fitting recognition of elderly person who remained active and served as a role model and an inspiration to other elderly individuals.

He said it was important that everyone, not just the elderly, took part in creating a better society, where there is solidarity between generations and where elderly individuals are integral to every aspect of Maltese society.
