Inter fell short in their bid to reach the Italian Cup final yesterday, with a 1-0 home win over Sampdoria not enough to make up for the 3-0 defeat they suffered in the first leg of the semi-final.

Sampdoria's 3-1 aggregate success takes them through to face Lazio in the May 13 final at Rome's Stadio Olimpico.

It will be Sampdoria's first cup final appearance since 1994 where they defeated Ancona while, for Inter, defeat meant their run of four successive final appearances came to an end.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic had given Inter hope midway through the first half of the second leg with a fine angled shot from the edge of the area.

The home side, who had Marco Materazzi sent off at the end of the match, created plenty of chances for a second goal, especially at the end of the first half.

Lazio won 2-1 at Juventus on Wednesday to complete a 4-2 aggregate win.
