An Italian man who skipped bail to visit his mother in Italy has been released on the same bail conditions he had previously.

Leandro Ambrogio, 45, was granted bail on February 12 and ordered not to leave the country unless he filed an application in court. He had been charged with smashing the car of his daughter and her boyfriend.

Ignoring this condition and failing to sign his bail book, Mr Ambrogio flew to Italy on May 28 and only returned on September 20, Police Inspector Fabian Fleri told a court yesterday.

Magistrate Lawrence Quintano found him guilty and jailed him for 90 days.

However, Mr Ambrogio filed an immediate appeal and was releas-ed on bail under the same conditions as before, much to the annoyance of the Police Inspector who warned that Mr Ambrogio would probably leave the island again.

Magistrate Quintano said that as regards the law his hands were tied.

Lawyer Martin Fenech appeared for Mr Ambrogio.
