A Sicilian door-to-door salesman picked the wrong neighbourhood to sell his household items: tax officials spotted him knocking on doors right next to the VAT office.

Erasmo Cuneo, 36, ended up in court and was fined €700 after he admitted selling items without a fiscal receipt book over the past days.

Magistrate Audrey Demicoli heard how the man, from Palermo, called at houses in Birkirkara in an attempt to sell quilts and crockery but was clueless to the proximity of the VAT office.

Police Inspector Kevin Farrugia and Paul Scicluna from the VAT Department prosecuted.
