Malta coach Tom Saintfiet is determined to help the national team play a more attacking football as the Belgian was unveiled as the new national coach on Friday.

Saintfiet has signed a two-year-contract with the Malta FA and replaces Pietro Ghedin who stepped down from his job after five-and-a-half years in charge.

“I have great respect on the work carried out by Pietro Ghedin who during his spell has made the team very solid defensively,” Saintfiet said.

“We have to continue on his work as we must realise that we are a very small country and defensive organisation is very important against bigger nations.

“However, at the same time I would like the team to play more positive football and create more scoring chances as we cannot aspire to win football matches if we don’t score balls. My vision is to have four or five players pushing up the field and create chances.

“But to achieve that we need time but I’m confident that together with the players we can work to become a more competitive team.”
