A 400-year-old statue of the Risen Christ which will be carried triumphantly in procession in Valletta this evening has just undergone a €13,000 restoration project.

The work was carried out mostly by gilder and restorer Publius Magro thanks to a donation by Victor Spiteri. A number of carpenters and other tradesmen were also involved.

The work included reinforcement to ensure that no damage is caused when the statue is 'raced' through the streets of Valletta, and new gold gilding.

The procession is one of just two which are held in the evening of Easter Sunday, the other being in Mosta.

The procession leaves the Jesuits Church in Merchants' Street at 6 p.m.
