A series of strikes by Royal Mail workers over the past days did not affect Malta-bound mail, a Maltapost spokesman said yesterday.

"The volume of mail from the UK to Malta has not been affected. No mail has been stuck at Heathrow," the spokesman said.

He added, however, that some clients might experience delays if items they requested from UK suppliers were held up in delivery to Heathrow.

The action, initiated by the Communications Workers' Union last week, is the biggest since 2007's general strike, with a reported backlog of over 20 million items in London alone. The strikes are being held in the light of a "frightening and unprecedented" change planned by Royal Mail. According to the CWU, "the postal industry, along with the workplaces and jobs of our members, could be unrecognisable" as a result of such change.
