Rotary Club Malta recently inaugurated the solar heating systems for two local non-governmental organisations (NGOs) - Dar il-Kaptan, the respite home for the disabled in Mtarfa, and the Drug Rehabilitation Centre at San Blas run by Caritas Malta.
The systems were paid from funds raised at Rotary Club Malta's annual fundraising dinner last May.
The San Blas project was inaugurated by Mgr Victor Grech, while the Dar il-Kaptan project was inaugurated by the chairman of the Foundation for Respite Care Services, Alfred Bezzina, in the presence of Rotary Club Malta officials.
Rotary Club Malta president John de Giorgio said: "Through these projects, the two NGOs have been able to replace the banks of old, inefficient water heaters with solar-driven systems leading to direct cost savings.
The solar systems will reduce each organisation's energy consumption bills and deliver estimated cost savings from the project of around €7,000 annually.
This is one of 12 projects undertaken by Rotary Club Malta this Rotarian year. Rotary Club Malta, founded in 1967, aims to provide service in the community both locally and overseas.
