Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney scored a hat-trick at Portsmouth to help his side to a 4-1 win and cut Chelsea's lead to two points at the top of the Premier League.

Ryan Giggs also struck for the league champions who now have 31 points from 14 games, two points behind Chelsea who travel to Arsenal tomorrow.

Big-spending Manchester City were held 1-1 by struggling Hull City to record a Premier League record seventh successive draw while West Ham United pulled clear of the relegation zone with a 5-3 win over promoted Burnley.

Also tomorrow, Everton host Liverpool in the Merseyside derby.
