A 65-year-old taxi driver and a 26-year-old Romanian lost their lives in a traffic accident at St Andrew’s Road, Swieqi this morning.

The police said they were informed of the accident at about 5.30 a.m. The Romanian was driving an Audi in the direction of St Julian’s when he crashed into a Peugeot taxi driven by a 65-year-old man from Sliema after ending on the wrong side of the road. The taxi was coming from the opposite direction.

The Romanian died on the spot and the taxi driver died later in hospital.

An eyewitness said that both were without a seat belt.

An inquiry is being held by duty magistrate Lawrence Quintano.
