Sampdoria will be hoping Federico Macheda's transfer will be completed prior to tomorrow's match against Roma.

Macheda is set to join on a six-month loan deal from Manchester United.

The 19-year-old striker trained with Sampdoria yesterday and could make his debut with the Genoa outfit this weekend should the paperwork arrive in time.

Sampdoria moved for Macheda after Antonio Cassano's departure for AC Milan following a row with club president Riccardo Garrone.

"I am happy with this move," said Macheda. "I am here to do well.

"I want to improve myself, and I hope to bring many satisfactions to the Sampdoria fans.

"(Sir Alex) Ferguson told me to become a better player and return to Manchester stronger. I also think I will return to England once the loan period is over."

With or without Macheda, Sampdoria will be looking to clinch their first league win of the year at the Luigi Ferraris stadium on Sunday.

Domenico Di Carlo's side have collected just four points in their last four league games and Thursday's 3-0 defeat at Palermo dropped them to ninth in the standings.

Roma, meanwhile, make the journey to Genoa invigorated by their come-from-behind victory over Catania.

Claudio Ranieri's men won 4-2 in their first game of 2011 to climb to fourth in the standings.

Roma will have an added motivation to beat Sampdoria, knowing that a victory coupled with a Lazio defeat could see them leapfrog their city rivals in the standings.

Roma trail two points behind second-placed Lazio and lie seven points adrift of league leaders AC Milan after 18 games played.

Roma striker Marco Borriello believes his team can battle for the league title.

"This team was created to win," said Borriello. "We want to win the scudetto."

Ranieri will have all of his players available, with the exception of injured midfielder David Pizarro.
