The role of the Data Protection Commissioner will be strengthened to ensure that people’s personal data will not be abused of, Consumer Affairs Minister Helena Dalli said this morning.

She was speaking during an international conference on online privacy and the protection of personal data.

Minister Dalli said she is positive that on the issue of privacy, an important issue which has an impact on all citizens, there will be a non-partisan consensual approach in the local political sphere.

This conference is organised by the Consent consortium, one of the largest research projects to be investigating the internet privacy, including social networking systems such as Facebook and Twitter.

This €3 million project, which has been underway for three years, is coordinated by the University of Groningen in the Netherlands in collaboration with the University of Malta, one of the leading members of the consortium. The project is funded by the EU.

A draft report will be presented to the European Council, European Commission and European Parliament in April.
