United Launch Alliance today sent the GPS IIF-9 satellite into a semi-synchronous orbit from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

A statement from the United Launch Alliance said "GPS satellites serve and protect our war fighters by providing navigational assistance for US military operations on land, at sea, and in the air. Civilian users around the world also use and depend on GPS for highly accurate time, location, and velocity information."

As a result of the GPS satellite launch, the next generation satellite is expected to enhance accuracy and strengthen signals and performance for users, including US Air Force personnel and civilians.
