A worrying number of robberies have occurred over the past few months at Santa Maria Estate, Mellieha. The lack of street lights in most streets means that after dusk the whole area plunges into pitch darkness making this neighbourhood increasingly unsafe and predisposed to crime.

Santa Maria Estate is no longer just a summer residence as it was many years ago but is a fully fledged neighbourhood where a large number of families live all year round. Countless requests by concerned residents for adequate lighting have so far fallen on deaf ears and to date no budget seems to have been allocated for these much needed street lights.

Do we have to wait for a serious armed robbery before something is done about this situation? Can the authorities please take action?
