We are in politics to create and implement policies for the common good and therefore for a better quality of life and not to discuss and combat scandals.

This was stated by the new PN candidate Roslyn Borg Knight during Newsfeed on Net TV when referring to the incredible news – among a series of others – of the two lawyers’ nominations for magistrates in breach of the Constitution. She was posing a rhetorical question to Prime Minister Joseph Muscat: do you know what you are doing?

One can easily assume Muscat knows what he is doing, as he did prior to the 2013 election. Then he knew he wanted to govern at all costs and promised everything to everyone.

However his priorities were to sustain his position as prime minister for as long as possible through clientelism versus a focus on the common good.

This was his roadmap, which centered on extremely well-paid jobs – sharply contrasting with the €7 monthly increase for pensioners – for inner circle friends and supporters incorporating not only those appearing on billboards or most of ONE’s employees but also top EU positions for those who don’t support the EU.

Projects like Żonqor Point and Cafè Premier must have featured prominently in his roadmap as well.

As Jason Azzopardi correctly commented in the same programme: Thank God for a pro-active and effective Opposition, competently and responsibly led, giving us hope for an administration characterised by the highest standards including ethical standards, transparency, meritocracy and honesty that will make this country proud once again.
