The main road leading to Żurrieq has been completed - six weeks ahead of schedule and on budget.

The road, which was reopened for traffic about a week ago, had claimed many a car shock absorber in its previous atrocious state, which used to see drivers crossing to the other side of the road to avoid the potholes as they went into Żurrieq. It was also prone to flooding during rainstorms.

It is now a far cry from what it used to be as it has been built from the foundations up. The works cost €4.4 million, €3.6 million of which were provided by the EU.

The Ministry of Infrastructure said the original foundations, built in the 70s, were based on weak material mixed with soil, which was not strong enough to cope with the heavy vehicles which access the village.

The road surface has also been upgraded to have better skid resistance and the lighting system has been changed.
