The Auditor General has been asked to investigate allegations on the director general of the Internal Audit and Investigations directorate.

The request was made by the Prime Minister through his permanent secretary on a recommendation of the Internal Auditing and Investigations board at the request of director general Rita Schembri herself.

Ms Schembri requested to be on leave until the investigation is concluded so that she could concentrate on her defence so a temporary director is being appointed in the coming days.

Ms Schembri is the Maltese member of the OLAF supervisory committee.
