Changes to the agreement between the Holy See and Malta on marriages have been agreed and will be signed on Monday, the Curia said today.

In April, just weeks after the general election, the government sent a note verbale to the Holy See requested talks aimed at revising the 1992 agreement.

The agreement had given the Ecclesiastical Tribunal the final say in marriage cases, but the government argued that the Civil Courts should be supreme, in line with the separation of Church and State.

The talks kicked off soon after and were led by Foreign Minister George Vella  and Mgr Aldo Cavalli, Apostolic Nuncio. The bishops of Malta and Gozo and the parliamentary secretary for justice were also involved.
