The government will next year team up with the private sector for a revamp of Lower Fort St Elmo, which until recently was used as a space for the building of carnival floats. A request for proposals will be issued, Finance Minister Edward Scicluna said in the Budget speech.

He also said that although the government had not managed to re-allocate the Monti market to Ordnance Street in Valletta, alternative solutions were being considered. Whatever decision was ultimately taken, the government was determined to see a new market management system with greater discipline and cleanliness.

He also announced that €50 million will be spent next year on the rehabilitation of social housing estates and the building of new social housing within development zones.
