An asylum seeker from Togo who spent two months in preventive custody in Germany where he was caught after he escaped from Malta was this morning given a two year jail term suspended for four years.

Police Inspector Edel Mary Camilleri said Kumai Idris, 28, who lived in Hal Far said was returned to Malta yesterday.

Legal aid lawyer Anthony Cutajar said that besides spending the two months in preventive custody, his client had also been fined €200.

In view of the circumstances, both the defence and the prosecution agreed that the accused should get a suspended jail term.

Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera also took into consideration that although Mr Idris was a failed asylum seeker, he was appealing the decision.
