Easygas this morning refused to accept a truckload of dark grey gas cylinders delivered to it by officials of the Malta Resources Authority after having been collected by rival company Liquigas.

Informed sources said Liquigas tried to return the cylinders in line with a legal notice issued last month which said that gas cylinders belong to the company which first puts them on the market.

A truck carrying more than 200 cylinders was driven to the Easygas plant at Luqa but was not allowed in by the company and later was driven off.

Sources said Easygas refused the cylinders because they were not accompanied by documents proving that it had originally put them on the market. Some of the cylinders reportedly did not have serial numbers.

Easygas is currently in a court battle with Liquigas on the gas cylinders and on the legal notice. It argues that the cylinders belong to the clients who pay the deposit for them, and not to either company.

Liquigas over the past months accused Easygas of hoarding a large number of its yellow cylinders and allegedly repainting them dark grey and removing their serial numbers.

LIQUIGAS STATEMENT

A Liquigas spokesman in a statement said: ’We confirm that a Liquigas vehicle this morning transported grey Easygas cylinders to its facility in Luqa in order to return them, in compliance with the new Legal Notice.

It was the MRA which confirmed to Liquigas which cylinders were to be returned to Easygas. In fact, the words ‘property of Easygas’ are indicated on many of these cylinders. One would therefore assume that the certificates in question should be held by Easygas themselves.

However, Easygas refused these grey cylinders and we are now seeking guidance from the Malta Resources Authority as to where to deposit them.

Since the start of our operation, and at every stage, Liquigas has adhered to all relevant regulations and we shall continue to do so, also in the interest of safety.

Liquigas looks forward to a speedy, and comprehensive solution to the issue for the benefit of all, not least the Maltese consumer’’.
