Retired judge Joseph David Camilleri is to chair the Asset Recovery Bureau, which will collect and administer fines and assets seized or confiscated by the courts or the police, the Ministry of Justice said.

The other members of the office are police superintendent Ian Abdilla, the Commissioner of Inland Revenue Marvin Gaerty, the director-general of the law courts Frankie Mercieca and the director-general of the Financial Intelligence Analysis Unit Kenneth Farrugia.

The Ministry of Justice said this office would help strengthen the fight against organised crime by identifying, seizing and administering assets held by criminals.

The office will also ensure payment of tax from profits derived from illegal activities.
