Retail trade in Malta increased by 1.1 per cent from January to February, but decreased by 0.2 per cent across the euro area.

According to Eurostat estimates, the 0.2 per cent decrease in the volume of retail trade in the euro area was due to drops of 0.8 per cent for food, drinks and tobacco, and 0.4 per cent for automotive fuel, while the non-food sector rose by 0.1 per cent.

When compared to February 2014, the increase in Malta was of 5.2 per cent.

The government said the increase was the biggest observed in Malta since 2010. February was also the third consecutive month that an increase was reported in retail trade. The trend was a reflection of an increase in optimism.
