The Retail Price Index went up by 0.68 per cent last month, reflecting mostly a an increase of 10.56 per cent in the Clothing and Footwear Index, the NSO said today.

Higher prices of vegetables and bread caused the Food Index to go up by 1.38 per cent.

An increase of 0.71 per cent was registered in the Household Equipment and House Maintenance Cost Index, mainly due to costlier items of furniture. Higher prices in respect of hygienic products caused an increase of 0.19 per cent in the Personal Care and Health Index.

The Water, Electricity, Gas and Fuels Index rose by 0.16 per cent, mainly on account of higher gas prices.

The Transport and Communication Index went down by 0.95 per cent, mainly due to lower airfares.

Cheaper travel articles caused the Other Goods and Services Index to fall by 0.15 per cent. A decline of 0.13 per cent was registered in the Recreation and Culture Index due to discounts on books. A fall in the price of beverages brought about a drop of 0.05 per cent in the Beverages and Tobacco Index.

In September, the twelve-month moving average rate of inflation stood at 0.80 per cent, whereas the annual rate stood at 1.76 per cent, the NSO said.
