Results are expected today in the university students' council elections which yesterday saw a turnout of 21.6 per cent, up slightly from 20 per cent at the last elections in April 2007.

Preliminary figures issued by the organising commission show a turnout of 2,600 out of 12,000 eligible voters, which include students at the main campus, the Junior College and related institutions, such as the Institute of Health Care.

A spokesman said that while turnout at the University had improved slightly, it had dropped at the Junior College, where only 764 of some 3,000 students voted.

The election was contested by 22 candidates from two rival blocs, the Christian Democratic SDM and ACT, a coalition of student organisations.
