The Malta Tourism Authority, Malta International Airport, Air Malta and hotels are pooling their resources to manage the situation that arose from a cloud of ash from a volcano in Iceland which is drifting deeper into Europe and which is resulting into the grounding of airlines all over northern Europe.

This already resulted in three days of cancellations of flights with hundreds of passengers unable to fly back home. All efforts are being made to reduce as much as possible any inconvenience to passengers.

The Malta International Airport is deploying additional staff for the facilitation of customer service and is distributing free refreshments to all passengers.

The MTA is monitoring the situation at the airport very closely detailing extra staff and assisting in the booking of alternative hotel accommodation.

Air Malta is offering its clients, and code-shared clients, free re-booking on any of its operated scheduled flights, or a full refund of ticket expenses or a flight to Rome.

Most hotels are being very flexible in taking in passengers that have had their flight cancelled. The Parliamentary Secretariat for Tourism, the Environment and Culture and the MTA are appealing to all hotels to be as flexible as possible.

Everybody is advised to continue monitoring airline and MIA websites for further developments.
