This is a letter by a reader who criticises the 60-minute parking scheme and proposes alternatives: 'When I read letters in favour of 'Residents' only/60-minutes parking' I think to myself that it is extremely difficult, almost impossible to fathom the depths to which humans can sink, in egotism and egocentricity. How can anyone say, Min jaħtaf jaħtaf (Whoever grabs, grabs), when he is the culprit. It is surely he, who is blindfolded and cannot see his contradictions. 'I am a senior citizen, and I have never found it more difficult to park my car in these places. If others are doing it, it does not mean it is correct. I have travelled to many places but haven't found one place where parking is allowed to residents only, except in private places. Even more so, some places, such as Balzan, allow only 20-minute parking.

'1. Why are roads made? The simple answer is to move from one place to another, not to restrict traffic by parking in them.

2. Who owns the roads? Surely they do not belong to residents.

3. Who provides the money to repair them? The whole community, not just residents.

'When a place is reserved only for residents, they are using public property for private use, and I think there is a law which prohibits this. I will go even further and suggest that a tax should be levied on those who leave their car parked on the road overnight regularly, as in Canada. They should park inside a garage. If you cannot afford to buy or rent a garage, you should not be allowed to buy a new car.' (Carmel Sammut)
